Exploring Human Potential

Riding the Santa Monica Freeway

Posted on | May 22, 2007 | 1 Comment

I was recently out on a visit to the Motion Picture and Television Fund’s long-term care facilities in Woodland Hills, CA (very impressed), and in the process experienced, for the first extended period, traffic on LA’s Santa Monica Freeway (not so impressed).

That is why my eye caught the May 7, 2007, issue of U.S. News and World Report with its cover feature on traffic congestion. The worst 10 cities in descending order, based on average commute time, are New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Newark, Boston, Los Angeles, Washington, Riverside (CA), Long Beach (CA) and San Francisco (CA).

As for the top 10 worst counties, the first four were in New York, and Orange County (#9) was the only California representative. Having spent the last decade in NYC, I asked a West Coaster why the situation in California seems so bad, from my perspective. He said “We all drive. Most of you use mass transit.”

Population trends for greater LA? They’ll top 15 million people in 20 years. And what does this have to do with health? Well, in just one disease area – heart attacks – a 2004 NEJM article said rates double in a traffic jam. Think ulcers, respiratory disease, and trauma.

Health = Transportation = Health (for lots of reasons).
